MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)

MRI uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field rather than X-rays to provide clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. The technique has proven valuable for the diagnosis of a broad range of conditions, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, and joint and musculoskeletal disorders.

The Benefits of MRI Include:

Images of soft-tissue structures such as the heart and major vessels are clearer and more detailed than with other imaging methods.

MRI is used to image every part of the body, but is particularly useful in neurological conditions, disorders of the muscles and joints, for evaluating tumors and showing abnormalities in blood vessels.

MRI enables the detection of abnormalities that might be obscured by bone tissue with other imaging methods.

MRI provides a fast, noninvasive and often less expensive alternative to other techniques of cardiac diagnosis.

MR images can help physicians evaluate the function as well as the structure of the heart muscles and valves.

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to allow physicians to explore the inner workings of the human body without using potentially harmful ionizing radiation.

Contrast agents may be injected intravenously to show enhancement of blood vessels, tumors or inflammation. If contrast is indicated, and you are over the age of 60, specific blood work will be obtained prior to your exam. It is recommended that patients dress comfortably and leave valuables (jewelry) at home. Patients with some metal implants and cardiac pacemakers are prevented from having an MRI due to effects of the powerful magnetic field and powerful radio waves.

Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center offers both high field MRI and low field Open MRI to better serve the needs of the physician and patient.  The hospital is also equipped for exams to be done under sedation with a dedicated Radiology RN.
