Therapy Services

Our highly trained physical therapists provide compassionate care and services. We strive for excellence and set high standards. We have therapists that are certified in Neuro-IFRAH (Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation And Habilitation) and NDT (Neuro Developmental Therapy) and specialize in areas such as orthopedics, spinal cord injury, brain injury, geriatrics, and neurology. Treatment plans are individualized and may include reducing pain and swelling, improving joint mobility, and increasing flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, and/or balance. To ensure quality of care, our therapists continue to develop innovative programs that improve the functionality and quality of life for our patients. In addition to standard therapy sessions, we offer:

LiteGait

LiteGait® is a gait training device that simultaneously controls weight bearing, posture, and balance over a treadmill or over ground. It creates an ideal environment for treating patients with a wide range of impairments and functional levels. LiteGait provides proper posture, reduces weight bearing, eliminates concerns for balance, and facilitates the training of coordinated lower extremity movement. LiteGait has been incorporated in many of our therapies and continually improves our patients’ rehabilitation outcomes.

Balance Master

The Balance Master® provides interactive, functional training exercises using visual biofeedback, coupled with sensitive, real-time monitoring of movement. This motivates patients to achieve better balance control faster. Exercise protocols available on the Balance Master can be tailored to meet individual patient needs and can be progressed as the patient's capabilities improve.

Wii Therapy

Known as “Wii-habilitation”, this popular video game helps patients improve strength, balance, endurance, and motor coordination. The Wii therapy mirrors traditional therapy exercises, but the patients become engrossed in playing and don’t notice the pain or hard work that they are doing. Patients look forward to this therapy as they can have fun while benefitting from rehabilitation!

Therapy at PRC may include the following:
• Continuation of post-operative physical therapy
• Treatment of orthopedic injuries
• Therapeutic exercise for strengthening
• Bed mobility training
• Balance training
• Vestibular rehabilitation
• Transfer training
• Electrical stimulation
• Gait training
• Adaptive equipment training
• Fall prevention
• Pulmonary/cardiac rehabilitation

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists evaluate the level of functioning and determine an individualized therapy plan. This therapy is implemented through exercises and routines that strengthen muscles that are necessary in daily activities, such as dressing, eating, bathing, toileting, cooking, shopping and banking, transferring to a bed or tub, etc. PRC therapists improve patient skills to achieve independence in all aspects of their daily lives. We customize treatment programs to focus on the individual’s goals. Our therapists will get you ready to go home with vital skills on how to function with maximum independence and accomplish daily living tasks.

PRC has a full service ADL Suite, with a home-like setting. The ADL Suite is utilized to incorporate IADL training i.e. homemaking skills. We have a fully functional kitchen, laundry room, and bedroom with closet space. We have a bathroom area with portable items (tub, sink with vanity, and standard height toilet) to simulate the exact setup a patient has at home.

Speech-Language Pathology

Our Speech/Language Pathologists are trained in providing evaluation and treatment for patients with a variety of speech and swallowing disorders. They also perform VitalStim® Therapy, Modified Barium Swallow Studies, host a monthly Stroke Support Group, and are a U.S. Resource Center for Proloquo2go Augmentative Communication Devices.

VitalStim®
- Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Therapy is a new way to treat dysphagia (difficulty with swallowing) and is often used for patients who have neurological problems such as stroke or multiple sclerosis. This procedure safely retrains the pharyngeal muscles with neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBS) - When a patient is having difficulty swallowing, called dysphagia, the Speech-Language Pathologist will observe the patient while eating and may conduct an instrumental assessment of the patient's swallowing ability. This involves eating foods and drinking various consistencies of barium while the Speech-Language Pathologist watches an X-ray. After completing the MBS, a plan of treatment and diet recommendations will be determined.

Proloquo2go Augmentative Communication Device - Proloquo2Go™ is a product that provides a full-featured communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking. It brings natural sounding text-to-speech voices, close to 8000 up-to-date symbols, powerful automatic conjugations, a large default vocabulary, full expandability and extreme ease of use on the iPad.

Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology is a subfield of clinical psychology that focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating the changes in thinking and behavior that can result from injuries to the brain. Our Neuropsychology Department consists of a licensed professional who holds a doctoral degree with extensive education and experience in the neurosciences. Our department also supports the education of graduate students from the University of Central Florida.

The primary role of PRC's Neuropsychologist is the empirical assessment of cognitive functioning. That is, identifying, measuring, and treating the changes in thinking ability (for example, memory, attention, reasoning, judgment, and perception) that are often observed following insult to the brain. In addition, the Neuropsychologist evaluates and treats behaviors that frequently occur with acute or chronic illness, such as emotional and adjustment changes.

Recreational Therapy

Recreational Therapy is an integral part of the comprehensive therapy program. Our Recreational Therapist has a baccalaureate degree in Therapeutic Recreation and is certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, and is a CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist).

She will meet with the PRC team to determine the goals and objectives of the therapy. She will develop a therapeutic plan that is consistent with the patient’s needs, capabilities, and interests. The PRC Recreational Therapist will use recreation services to improve or maintain physical, mental or emotional and/or social functioning to assist individuals in with their leisure activities. Recreational Therapy uses activities to enhance health, growth, development, and independence through intrinsically rewarding leisure behavior.

Recreational Therapy may include:
• Community Outings and Re-entry
• Gardening Activities
• Computer Activities
• Arts and Crafts
• Sports and Games
• Theme Events

Our Recreational therapy department also heads up our annual PRC Reunion. For more details contact Kristin Rowe at Kristin.hardin-rowe@fhmd.org.
