Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a radiologic subspecialty that comprises diagnostic examinations resulting in image of body anatomy and function. Usingradioactive tracer substances( isotopes) to demonstrate organ function and structure, these results yield medical information that may otherwise be unavailable, require surgery, or necessitate more expensive diagnostic tests.

Nuclear medicine is commonly used to evaluate the thyroid gland, heart function, bone injury or disease, blood clots in the lungs, and liver and gallbladder function.

The amount of radiation from a nuclear medicine procedure is comparable to that received during a diagnostic x-ray.
