Imaging Center gives new hope to cancer patients
6/3/2010
(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) -- Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Imaging Center has registered with the National Oncologic PET Registry Project (NOPR) to cover the costs of the essential positron emission tomography scan (PET) for Medicare and Medicaid cancer patients.
Previously, Medicare only reimbursed for PET scans for several common cancers, but beneficiaries will now have PET scans covered for essentially all types of cancer including brain, cervical, pancreatic and ovarian cancers. The scan is a test that images the function of cells to show differences between healthy and diseased tissue.
Florida Hospital Memorial’s Imaging Center now joins the rank of more than 600 PET facilities in the country who have registered to take part in the NOPR, which will collect data nationwide to allow for better assessment of the impact of the PET scan in the management of patients with cancer.
“We are proud to be involved in such a project where oncologists and physicians have a unique opportunity to make PET/CT scans available to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries,” Cindy Winter said, Executive Director of Imaging.
In its origination in 2006, the NOPR project was slated to benefit thousands of Medicare and Medicaid patients around the country.
